Rock detective

JIgsaw piecesHave you ever climbed a tall mountain and wondered how it got to be so high? Have you ever thought about why we have four seasons? Do you sometimes wish you understood just why global warming is bad?

A geologist is nothing more than a rock detective. All the rocks hold clues that help explain how they formed and the land around them formed and why plants grow where they do and why animals roam where they do… The answers lie around us all the time. The rock may not move fast, but they are the clues that reveal the world around us. Like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, each rock is its own piece of the 'big picure.'. Put all the pieces together and you get the greatest picture of all...

Exploring the natural world is an endless trail of clues and puzzle pieces which are constantly revealing startling things about the planet we live in. Unlike any other branch of science, geologist get to run rampant across all disciplines seeking to explain why this world is not as predictable as we think it should be. Man is known for being the first species to ‘conquer’ the planet and exploit its hidden secrets. Yet like the layers of an onion, the world is constantly tantalising us with more secrets.

To some, this maybe frightening, and they choose to ignore it and take simple explanations. But the wonders of the world are infinitely beautiful and never terrifying. There is no better feeling than to go for a pleasant hike and intuitively understand the environment around you. The gravel beneath your feet are the shattered remains from the peaks in the distant, that rounded pebble you pocketed probably slid down the riverbed, slowly eroding itself as it tumbled against other rocks, the trees towering above you anchor the slope the trail snakes through…

Sally has made a career out of geology, roaming across the world in search of photographs, chocolate, gold, diamonds, nickel and copper. She has been to the polar regions, the highest mountain ranges, the hottest deserts, the wettest jungles and everything inbetween. For her, geology is not just a career, it is a way of life. Sally thrives on constantly shifting goal posts, and nature science provides that for her. As soon as one thing is understood, something comes along which requires further exploration. Life is never dull when there is so much to look for!
